This four-level course is intended for those
who have little or no experience with computers. We will take
you through the inside and outside of a computer, into the
operating system, and through some basic applications.
Course highlights include a discussion on networking,
ergonomics, and plenty of discussion on the many roles computers
play in our lives. Course objectives map to Modules 1, 2, and 7
of the ICDL core.
Detailed Course Outline
General Concepts
To begin, participants will learn some
basic computer terms, about the types of
computers available, and the basic parts
of a PC. We will also take a brief look
at how a PC works and what can impact
its performance.
Hardware Devices
Next, we will focus on the main hardware
components of a PC: CPU, RAM, input
devices, output devices, and secondary
storage devices.
Software
This section will focus on basic terms
related to software, the differences
between operating systems and
applications, types of software
available, and legal issues related to
software. We will also take a
fascinating look at how software is
built.
Information Networks
To begin this section, we will discuss
some networking terms. Then, we will
explore just what a network is, how it
works, and why it is useful. Finally, we
will expand our discussion to look at
the Internet.
Application
This section will apply some of the
things that we have learned so far to
the real world. We will look at how
computers are used in the workplace,
including e-commerce and instant
messaging. We will also explore some of
the issues with a technological
workplace, such as tele-commuting,
ergonomics, safety, and environmental
awareness.
Security
Participants will learn some basic
security rules, how to create a good
password, how to backup data, and how to
protect data using anti-virus and anti-spyware
programs.
Working with the Computer
Now that we have a good understanding of
the background workings of a computer,
we will learn how to turn the computer
on, perform basic tasks, use the
desktop, customize settings, and print
items.
Working with Files and Folders
Next, participants will learn how to
create and manage files and folders. We
will also look at compressed (ZIP)
files.
Understanding Applications
Participants will learn some basic
skills that apply to working with
applications. Then, they will learn how
to use some basic applications,
including WordPad, NotePad, Task
Manager, Calculator, and Paint.
Participants will also learn how to
install and uninstall programs.
Web Browsers and the Internet
To conclude the course, we will take a
quick look at how to use Internet
Explorer to browse the Internet, work
with Web pages, and create favorites.
